Dr. Susan van Scoyoc has over forty years of continuous clinical practice and over twenty-five years of expert witness work. She has trained and earned degrees in the UK and the USA. Dr. van Scoyoc is registered as a Counselling Psychologist and Health Psychologist with HCPC in the UK. She is a fellow of the British Psychological Society and chartered as a counselling and health psychologist.
Dr. Van Scoyoc was awarded Practitioner of the Year by the BPS in 2012, largely due to her expert witness work, and Supervisor/Mentor/Trainer Award by the Division of Counselling Psychology in 2023. She is a founding member of the Register of Psychologists specialising in Psychotherapy. She was an assessor for the EuroPsy registration and is registered on the same with the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations. She is recognised on the BPS Register of Qualifications in Test Use (RQTU).
Dr. van Scoyoc is a frequent lecturer at UK universities in expert witness work. She offers workshops in various aspects of expert witness work including presenting the British Psychological Society’s series of workshops. She produced the online training Essential Knowledge for the Expert Witness for psychologists and remains active in further development of the BPS’s training programme.
During her career as an expert witness, she has prepared more than 100 reports for the courts and testified in all manner of cases – civil, criminal, and tribunal – including complex family law cases, criminal cases for murders, child abuse, historical sexual abuse, kidnapping, human trafficking, terrorism, and more. She provides consultation to solicitors and barristers in assessing what is needed for a particular case.
Dr. van Scoyoc provides supervision and mentoring for other psychologists acting as expert witnesses, either on a recurring basis or ad hoc.
Currently, she is Head of Assessment for the Qualification in Counselling Psychology at the British Psychological Society.
